2018: Serena Williams argues with referee Carlos Ramos during her final match against Naomi Osaka at the 2018 US Open.
From the photographer, Sarah Stier:
“Serena is a very emotional player, reactive and incredibly passionate about her sport and
being competitive. At this time in 2018, Serena was arguing with the chair umpire during the match about being coached from the stands, which had caused a lot of controversy.
“While this was going on, I was just taking photos to try to document the moment and the unfolding of the story, so it wasn’t clear, like many of the viewers there, what was really going on until after the game. This image was a unique capture because not many photographers had this point of view.
“To me, this photo exemplifies Serena as such a memorable player. She’s not perfect, like none of us are, but she has great care for the sport and has invested decades of her life into it, for which I have a lot of respect.” “. .”
