President Nana Akufo-Addo has called on the world community to help West Africa deal with the growing threat of terrorism.
He stated that the threat deserves the world’s attention.
According to him, West Africa is forced to spend its limited resources on the threat.
The president explained that this money could have been used in another way to educate the young population of Africa.
“All of us in the region are forced to spend large amounts of money on security. This is money that we should be spending on educating and training our youth,” he said.
“This is a global problem that deserves the attention of the world community for a global solution.”
President Akufo-Addo also said that cancer has served as a catalyst for some coups in the region.
“Terrorist pressure has provided a pretext for the unfortunate reappearance of military rule in three of the 15 members of the ECOWAS Community,” he added.
The general debate of the 77th session of the UN General Assembly began on Tuesday, September 20, with the theme ‘A turning point: transformative solutions to intertwined challenges’.
More than 150 representatives of heads of state and government are expected to deliver speeches at the assembly.
