Members of the El Paso City Council wrote a letter to Mayor Oscar Leeser on Wednesday, asking him to issue a Disaster Declaration over the surge of migrants, which has led the city to spend $300,000 a day to house, feed and bus them to New York and Chicago.

In September alone, the city could spend up to $10 million on immigrants, diverting funds away from vital services like the police and fire departments. A Disaster Declaration would shift some of the burden onto the state and federal governments.

In a separate open letter published Wednesday, Blake Barrow, executive director of the El Paso Rescue Mission, pleaded with the Biden administration for help with the immigration crisis.

Barrow also said that about 20% of the migrants who receive help from his organization choose New York City as their final destination and are not brought there against their will.
