Man evades officers after getting into family fight

ST. GEORGE, Utah – A man was arrested Thursday after being involved in a family fight, then evaded police and led them on a manhunt in St. George.

Officials with the St. George Police Department said officers were dispatched to a report of a family fight in the area of ​​1700 North and 2000 West at approximately 8:10 a.m.

When contacted by police, the subject, identified as Tyler Oliphant, ran off on his bike.

“Information provided by those at the scene suggested that a weapon had been involved in the family fight. Due to that and other circumstances, the police decided to go after Tyler,” said a press release from the St. George Police Department on Thursday afternoon.

Police said that during the chase, Oliphant rode his bike through the parking lot of Snow Canyon High and Snow Canyon Middle schools.

“At no time did the suspect enter either school and both school resource officers were briefed and were on scene,” the statement said.

Oliphant then moved to the bike path along Lava Flow Drive. Shortly after, he was stopped at the corner of 2300 Santa Clara Drive and taken into police custody.

Emergency personnel arrived at the scene, evaluated Oliphant for injuries and then transported him to St. George Regional Hospital.

After receiving medical clearance, he was admitted to Purgatory for investigation of:

  • school-intrusion on the grounds
  • two counts of domestic violence – threat of violence
  • a charge of domestic violence in the presence of a child
  • one count of evading police
  • a charge of possession of weapons by a dangerous person
  • three additional arrest warrants, including felony charges
