Khamzat Chimaev expects Diaz to leave the UFC “as a warrior”, downplays possible Costa fight

Las Vegas, NV — Khamzat Chimaev is about to headline his first UFC Pay-Per-View, headlining this weekend’s UFC 279 card alongside Nate Diaz.

It’s a rare non-title pay-per-view headline, but the weight of the names involved gives the promotion some wiggle room on this one. Diaz is a legend in the fighting game and one of the most popular names on the list. Chimaev, for the last few years, has been the next big thing in MMA.

It’s a big moment for Chimaev (11-0), no doubt. Although, as he told media outlets, including the Cageside Press, on the event’s media day on Wednesday, “All the moments in the UFC are like big moments for me.”

“It feels amazing. I’m fighting Nate Diaz. One of the guys who has been in this game for like 15 years. One of the legends,” he added. “Maybe this will be his last fight, who knows. I’m happy.”

The popular consensus on the fight, aside from it being something of a mismatch, is that Chimaev has the upper hand from the start. If it lasts long, that’s where Diaz, with world-renowned cardio, could take the lead. However, Chimaev is not worried that the fight will go to the end. He actually seems to prefer it.

“If two hours pass, I don’t care brother. I will take his head,” Chimaev said. What are you going to do? At 170, I can also fight at heavyweight. I don’t think that guy would survive an assault. We’ll see. I hope it lasts like five rounds. It’s good for him to show his heart, walk away from the UFC by being like a warrior. If he wins it in the first round, everyone will say ‘yeah, the guy is too old.’ Uncle Diaz has to go home.’”

Despite his upcoming fight with Diaz, Khamzat Chimaev has made more headlines for a confrontation with Paulo Costa this week. When asked what happened at the UFC PI that resulted in the pair splitting, “Borz” responded by saying “nothing,” before elaborating a bit.

“As if the guy was talking shit about me, I never talk about that guy. Maybe he wants something. He maybe he wants to be famous. I don’t know. Israel [Adesanya] fucked his ass, so what? Everybody sees that shit. You have to go back and do something with Izzy.”

Regarding a possible fight between the two, Chimaev downplayed the idea. “Why? I don’t fight those kind of guys. He already…someone fucked him up the ass.”
